"if you want to work into your 60's.... sales, and nothing else, and you don't need school to sell cars.any real work will grind you to dust before 60.there is good money in diesel... and you can specialize in heavy duty trucks where the customers cant afford to bitch about how much they pay."

"You could be a auto technician (mechanic) or maybe a machinist (build engines). My husband is a mechanic. He went to about 3 years of college for it (DADC in Denver). It is a very physical job-hard on the back. The pay really depends on where you live. A lot of shops pay what is called flat rate, which means you get paid by the job, not the hour. This could be good or bad. If it is a busy shop, year-round, you will probably do OK. A machinist is a true engine builder. This is where you may make more money. Good luck!"

"Automotive engineering.If I had to do it all over again, I would go further than my automotive technology degree. In the grand scheme of things the automobile is rapidly changing and the engineers that are designing the new breed of automobiles (hybrids, bio-fueled and full electrical) are going to need to be of the "younger" and more trained arena.Just my opinion....besides, you have to lie too much to sell a car."

"I would have to say to get into the electrical part of it. That is the ever changing and with electrical part of would come with the hybrids and knowing how to trouble shoot and repairs these and getting really good at it can easily get you $80k then from there its endless. Once you get the electrical part down you can keep moving up.***Automotive Engineer is someone who helps design a section of the vehicle, one can have a say on the outside body sturcture, or a part that is going to be inside the car, its a bit more complex than that..but gives you an idea...I work with alot of them and there is many wide ranges to an engineer when it comes to automotive.***"

"I went to UTI in Glendale Heights, IL. If you want to make good money go to a high end car manufacturer. I got accepted into the Audi MSAT through UTI and now currently work for Audi. As far as maximum earning, well there is no "maximum." It depends on how hard and fast you work. I met an Audi technician in NJ that makes $140 grand a year. There are plenty of techs at my shop who book 70+ hours a week, they are actually only there for less than 40 hours. At $30+ per hour, you are talking six figures. Also some shops offer bonus incentives for making a certain amount of hours in a week.The automotive field is a great thing to get into if you have the passion. You also need to be concerned with quality, not just speed. In todays world, people have too many choices to stick with a car company that causes them too many problems, comebacks, etc.I was the Valedictorian of my class at UTI. I graduated top honors from the Audi Academy. I had no problem finding a job. If you apply yourself, you could be getting a very good start in a great career. If you choose a good car company (Audi) and get specialized training with them you will be more valuable to them, AKA job security.By the way, as far as starting salary, I bought a 2004 Audi S4 and am living comfortably too. Plan on spending thousands on tools.I hope this was helpful."

"I went thru the same thing in high school. Instead I ended up being a welder which has been great to me. If you really want to be in the Auto tech jobs, definetly go into diesel. A lot better money. Plus you can get into the unions and get a retirement and good treatment. I hope this helps."
