automotive gps

An automotive navigation system is a satellite navigation system designed for use in automobiles. It typically uses a GPS navigation device to acquire position data to locate the user on a road in the unit's map database. Using the road database, the unit can give directions to other locations along roads also in its database. Dead reckoning using distance data from sensors attached to the drivetrain, a gyroscope and an accelerometer can be used for greater reliability, as GPS signal loss and/or multipath can occur due to urban canyons or tunnels.

It made me unsure of whether or not I wanted to purchase it. Is there another closely updated GPS automotive device that is reasonably priced that you would recommend?"

matthew_eddy90 replied: "The best price for a GPS will be 199.99 retail, then you will get an off brand name ex. Mios . If you want a better value and higher quality, go with a brand name like Magellan or Garmin they have been in the business a long time, but their systems will run 249.99-299.99 and up. I bought an older Magellan from buy.com for 149.99 and its great. I used to have a Mios and it was missing dozens of streets and it was just a Piece'O crap. My recommendation is shell out the few extra bucks for a Magellan/Garmin"

notaclue asked: "I recently decided to put one in my vehicle and wanted to know if anyone has one in particular they like over other models and why!I have used the Magellan 500 but now it is the 760. Pretty much the same and I liked the features however, folks tell me they "crash" a lot. The one I used previously never did it once. It isn't a big deal you just unplug and reboot is what I'm told.I would appreciate any intelligent input!I'm not looking for all the "bells and whistles" just a functional piece of equipment which does the job! The Magellan 760 roadmate goes for about $330 online and has all the features I need. Just wanted to know if there is a better model quality wise for the same money!"

PittCaleb replied: "I have been using my Garmin iQue 3600 for almost 4 years now and still love it. It's a full-featured Palm-based PDA with built in GPS software and receiver. You can move it anywhere easily and use while hiking. Initial price was $550. The 3600 has been discontinued, but online retailers and eBay seem to still carry new ones. There are newer models from Garmin in the iQue series you can investigate too - both Palm and PocketPC based. The iQue's screen is twice that of these tom tom units and similar. And for $500, it sure beats the limited functionality of the built-in units. Check it out."
