automotive paint

Dried green paint

Paint is any liquid, liquifiable, or mastic composition which after application to a substrate in a thin layer is converted to an opaque solid film.

Paint is used to protect, preserve, decorate (such as adding color), or add functionality to an object or surface by covering it with a pigmented coating. An example of protection is to retard corrosion of metal. An example of decoration is to add festive trim to a room's interior. An example of added functionality is to modify light reflection or heat radiation of a surface. Another example of functionality is the use of color to identify hazards or to identify the function of equipment and pipelines.

As a verb, painting is the application of paint. Someone who paints artistically is usually called a painter or artist, while someone who paints commercially is often referred to as a painter and decorator, or house painter.

Paint can be applied to almost any kind of object. It is used, among many other uses, in the production of art, in industrial coating, as a driving aid (road surface marking), or as a barrier to prevent corrosion or water damage. Paint is a semifinished product, or intermediate good as the final product is the painted article itself.

Paint can also be mixed with glaze to create various textures and patterns. This process is referred to as faux finish and is quite popular with discerning homeowners, architects and interior designers.

BRIT! asked: "I have finished my Jeep and looking to repaint it orange. I have painted my last car but it was just basic black and very easy to find. I'm having a real hard time finding Orange Automotive Paint. Any website, phone number, or tips are greatly appreciated."

Michael S replied: "Depending on where you want to go you can get paint at any automotive store that paintshops use or online. Mainly depends on what actual orange color you want. There are tons of choices. If you want a regular orange, hugger orange, tangerine, pearl orange etc. Best bet is go to a dealership and ask to see a paint chip book or look online at I think they have a paint chip section but it wont be as nice as one from a dealership, you wonty be able to see the metal flakes etc. Or just type in automotive paints on google. Hope this helps!"
rubendon replied: "go to a Napa auto parts store in my home town they will mix it for you after you pick the shade"

jon d asked: "I have a 92 BMW 525 and the paint is starting to show its wear. I am looking to repaint the whole car and get a friends to do it in his shop. He is only charging me for paint and not labor. How much can i expect a regular grade automotive enough to cover a whole car? thanks"

enhancedquang replied: "paint varies. quality paint such as ppg, dupont would run you from 500-2000 roughly for paint and clear. cheap stuff would run you from 100-600 depending on where you buy it from."
lcayote replied: "ordinary car paint is not to pricey but some special ones are a bmw would be a bit more they use better paint.but even then it should not not cost more than 100$"
Hydra replied: "Depends on the company Dupont, PPG, Sherman Williams, Diamont, also depends on color and flakes( pear, micca, crushed glass soforth.) paint could cost any where from 30 to 50 dollars for single stage color, 20 to 30 dollars more for metalic additive normally micca per pint. To paint a whole exterior of a car general requires 2 to 3 quarts, about equal amount clear coat generally urathane about 110 to 160 depending on grade quality and other materials like hardner and reducer together about 100 dollars and extra 10 to 30 dollars for masking paper and tape. lot of physical labor required to paint a car right must be good friend."
kody asked: "What was the old school automotive paint they used to use called, I think it was a lead based paint and that is why they stopped using it. I'm pretty sure I remember it was sposed to have a deeper finish. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I can't remember the type of paint or finish that was, or what it was called??"
Question posted courtesy of:
bobweb replied: "The oldest car paint I used to paint my 1968 Pontiac was an enamel paint. They also had lacquer paints. Then the EPA US Government made the paint manufacturer's take the high volatility compounds out that evaporated out into the atmosphere. So today's paints are different and maybe will say what they use now."With more than 10,000 auto paint colors in quality formulations that range from high-grade enamel to single-stage urethane to basecoat/clearcoat urethane, Maaco provides the price and quality you want for your car.""
wildmanny2 replied: "In the beginning there was nitrocellulose based lacquer,it was made obsolete by acrylic lacquer. As for enamels, there was alkyd enamel [Dupont Dulux for example].They were based on natural oils,They were obsoleted by acrylic then urethane enamels. Lead was used as a white pigment in the old paints then replaced by titanium dioxide. The antique paint technologies were great in their day but modern finishes are far superior in all ways."
Billy D asked: "I want to paint some things that are made out of wood with automotive paint, but the wood is to poris and so the paint looks horrible. I just want to know if there is a primer that I could use that would allow me to spray automotive paint over the top of it so that the paint does not just suck down into the grain of the wood. Any information would be great."

vtx.1800retro replied: "chevy your paint, see if its ok to use it on wood, i doubt it."
mirageguitarworks replied: "Yep, but you probably won't like the answer. The first word is "preparation". Wood surfaces must be sanded glass smooth. This means you start with 100 grit, then work up to 140, 180, 220, and 400. Then you take a =barely= damp cloth, wipe the wood down, allow it to dry completely and sand again with 220 and 400.It is important to note here that paint does NOT fill scratches that you can see or feel. The next word is "choice". You'll need to choose a good sandable primer- this can be regular automotive primer sealer sprayed on. At least 4 good coats, allow to dry at least 24 hours. At this point runs and drips are not too horrible.Sand until smooth with 400 grit and apply acrylic lacquer. If you are using spray cans, Duplicolor is a brand of acrylic lacquer... do NOT use automotive enamel. If it is a base coat (like reflective silver) you just need to apply enough for full coverage. 2 coats is usually plenty. Wait at least 24 hours again.Next, DO NOT SAND, but apply the color coats (again, just enough for full coverage) AND at least 12 to 15 coats of clear. Give 5 to 10 minutes between clear coats to allow it to set up. Allow to dry AT LEAST a week. Then, using wet sandpaper and a sanding block on flat surfaces, level the surface with 600 grit (be careful not to sand through the clear), then wet sand with 800 grit, then wet sand with 1000 grit. Make sure to wipe off the "slurry" that builds up from sanding as you go through the grits. Then, get some Maguires X-100 cleaner and swirl remover and follow the directions on the tube. After all this time and work you'll end up with a near-flawless finish."
