jgmafb replied: "I'd go with at least a gallon and judging by the way you ask the ?I would practice on something other than my car before I did the car itself.now everyone is going to have their own opinons here but, myself,I learned by doing it until I got it right . And by doing it my way I won lots of compententions,,mainly on paint jobs on Tour Buses for some of the worlds best known stars. As far as the thinner I never used the same mixture,it seemed to go by the temp.what i did stay constant with was LOTS of Hardener.the compressure, couldn't tell you the size,I did the paint for a buddy who owned a Diesel Repair shop and pulled off the main.JUST KEEP THE WATER OUT!!!!and before you apply the paint wash the body down with wool-lite"
FORD-MAN replied: "Local auto parts. Look into the duplicolor - premixed, ready to shoot."
prostoyurka asked: "when a urethane sealer says its has a 4 to 1 mix ratio what does that mean. 4 to 1 what. what role does activator play and how much of it do you mix? what role does reducer play and how much of it needs to be used? if im painting 2 doors, 2 fenders,a hood and a bumber. how many ounces of (DBU 2 stage) paint would i need? the bumber though needs a layer of sealer. If everything is sanded already what is every step i would have to take to get the job done."

Trevor E replied: "Well first if you don't have any experience using professional automotive products I urge you not to try it now. Simply due to the fact that the chemicals in these paints can and will kill you if not used properly and proper personal protection is not used correctly. That being said. A 4:1 ratio for sealer is 4 parts sealer to 1 part activator. The sealer is a product that is applied after any scuffing, body work and priming has been done to a panel. Sealer is used to "seal" the substrate to keep adverse reactions from occuring with the base and clear coats. Reducer is a crucial part of laying out the base and clear coats. Too much reducer in a mix and you will have problems with flash times, solvent popping, crazing and most obviously runs. Too little will produce the same problems as too little without the runs. Lastly your question to how much paint it is not ounces, it is quarts that you will need. You will need at least a quart of base coat (which when reduced and activated will make 1/2 gallon) A gallon of sealer and a gallon of clearcoat. As well as the required hardeners and reducers. Here is a crash course in painting, even though I highly recommend letting a proffesional do the job for you. All trim removed, handles, moldings, etc.All neccessary body work completed sanded with 320 grit and primed.Primer sand with 320, then 600 wet. Panels to be basecoated sanding with 600 wet on a block.Panels to be blended (little color all clear) sanded with 800 wet.Panels cleaned throughly with dishsoap and water and clean towels. Panels wiped clean with wax and grease remover. Sealer applied and allowed to dry approx 1 hour depending on product line used. Panels wiped clean with tack rag to remove dust.Basecoat applied. Usually three coats are required with a flash time of 15-20 minutes in between coats. Tack between each coat. Allow basecoat to cure approx 1 hour once again depending on product line used. Tack final time. Apply clear coat 3-5 coats with 15-20 minutes flash time in between coats. DO NOT TACK in between coats. Allow to dry approx 12-15 hours before handling, polishing or reinstalling. 24 hours to be safe. Of course there is a reason that these products say on the cans TO BE USED BY PROFESSIONALS ONLY. They really should be, if you are trying to save some money realize that you will actually pay more for the paint than a shop will, the frustration that you will run into trying to attempt this will out weigh the labor costs involved at a shop and a shop's results will undoubtly be nicer than the DIY's. If you decide that you wish to attempt this yourself good luck."
Faceman asked: "It doesn't have to be the best school. Just a class at some institute or county college. And about how long would one have to attend?"

mike1942f replied: "At a community college in Dallas, there is a program for mechanics and body repair that is subsidized by the dealers wanting to hire people. You might ask in your area."
BETH S replied: "You can attend a vocational school for about $1000.00 for their course. It would take 1 to 2 years. Depends on your area requirements."
