"You want them to think your a "go -getter" To be a good car salesman you have to close people. They are on the lot to buy a car. You have to be able to take what a customer says and us it to your advantage. If he is dead set on getting a certain amount for a trade in. Thats fine. You can work the deal to where it apears he is getting more for his trade in. If they think your hungry for sales, they will hire you."

"I am interested in starting a career in car sales as I have a few friends who are extremely happy in that field. At this point, I am just interested in gathering info to see if its right for me. One of my friends said she had to take a training course to do the job? Anyone know where I can go in Ontario to take this course? Possible online? Any info would be greatly appreciated!!!"

"word of advice, not because your friends are happy doing that means you will be too.second, you must really like cars to do good in this line of work. for example, let's say you are working for a ford dealership and the new mustang is out, you have to know every specific detail about that car so that you have a lot of confidence in what you are selling, me personally, i own a dealership, but when i buy a car, i say, if i like the way this car is , im pretty sure someone out there has to have this car. and it's true, most of the time. about where you could go, i have no clue, but whatever you choose, good luck. thanks"

"I am thinking about switching careers.I have been in the retail market for four years and looking for more opportunity.I can see the impact that the economy has on retail and this made me think twice about switching careers. Is the potential for money greater in retail or auto sales? What is your opinion on my career switch?"

"i think until the economy takes a big upward swing the market will be used cars!!! day of the beater is going to be reborn!!!"

"Hell-to-the-no. Such a large number of average income-earning level people in this country who have a car loan, is either trying to sell or is simply facing reposession.A nice car is great to have, but people are finding out more and more that in the face of this countries Recession, gas prices, etc., they could have held off until the market picked up (me included).People are seeking out good-condition used cars that can be bought outright, or cheaper cars with a low car payment. These days, with so many post-90's cars that have been manufactured, anyone can get a decent car at an affordable used, or "pre-owned" price. It depends too on geographics. If you happen to live in a ritzy place, then new car sales could work. If you live in an average income location, then I would NOT get into new-car sales. Also, I would only get into pre-owned car sales as long as it's a highly commercial operation, and not "Bobs Used Cars" with a few dozen cars on the lot.Pursue other options if possible, but heed the above advice if you feel you have no alternative to selling cars. Most people aren't buying new, few are buying old."

"As an Auto sales person myself, there are issues to consider. Are you making a decent living now? If not then perhaps a change is in order. You have indicated "auto sales" are your next choice. Do you know anything about autos (mechanical, features, benefits, etc), can you open a car hood and identify the main components under the hood. Identify the size of the engine or whether it is a front wheel drive, rear wheel drive, all wheel drive or 4x4 vehicle? There is more to auto sales then just talking to people/ In your other retail sales you had to know certain features and benefits for each item sold. Keep in mind that whatever business you decide to go into ... you are competing with others that are trying to make a living and they are not going to bend over and teach you all the things you need to know. You should have a foundation in whatever field you are trying to go in. Naturally, there are fields that provide training (insurance sales, computer sales, etc) so choose wisely. Also, check with the General Manager or whomever is doing the hiring at the auto dealership ... commission sales are different with each dealership. Some pay as little as $100 per sale, some pay a certain percentage with each sale ... the earnings are not always as they seem.If you are considering auto sales with the hopes of driving a new Demo vehicle ... that is not free, we pay for that each month. It is expensive when fewer cars are being sold and the economy is suffering. The turn over ratio in car salesman is very high. It's very demanding and the sales manager is on you to produce ... some cant take the heat.Give it some serious thought ..."

"Most people are capable of doing their own research. The reason you are distrusted is that you are probably on a commission, so it is in your interest to sell the most expensive vehicle you can.Your career is in jeapardy, because lots more customers are buying cars from online brokers or car supermarkets."
jjthinstrips replied:
"I don't think any salesmen lie...They just believe in their product! And they could just stretch the truth to make a sale, also..."
munkee_love replied:
"It's not that you lie. You just don't disclose. There IS a difference between the truth and the whole truth."
