automotive technology

mfparada asked: "I am 22 years old and have been out of highschool working full time for the past 4 years, pretty much wasting time. Ive always wanted to be a auto mechanic or work with computers, but cars seems more up my alley. There are no local tech schools like lincoln tech ect that offer this, but my local community college has a program with the technical high school for automotive technology. They offer 2 diffrent programs, one is for a certificate, the other is for a degree of associates of applied science, the difference being the certificate program has all the auto courses, and about 2 general classess math and language, the a.a.s degree program is the same but with more general classess as well as the auto courses. My questions basically are, is this a good idea school wise? Ive heard horror stories about places like pennco tech and lincoln tech and that you learn nothing there ect, and alot of people say your better off going to a community college instead. The certificate program offers this, and the a.a.s degree program is the same with the addition of general classess of Computer Science, Natural Science, Arts and Humanities, and Social Science General Education CourcesCreditsWritten Communication (ENG 101 required) 3Mathematics (MTH 104 required) 3Total 6Program CoursesCreditsAUT 101 Automotive Service Fundamentals 2AUT 102 Automotive Brake Systems 3AUT 103 Automotive Steering, Suspension, and Alignment 3AUT 104 Automotive Drivelines and Manual Transmission 3AUT 105 Automotive Electricity/Electronics 4AUT 201 Automotive Computer Systems 3AUT 202 Automotive Fuel and Emission Systems 4AUT 203 Automotive Engine Repair 4AUT 204 Automotive Transmissions/Transaxles 4Total 30Total Required for Degree 36So will just the certificate program do it for me? Im not that great at general classess and such."

lenfantdezappa replied: "This program will help, all you really need to do is be able to get your A.S.E. cert and most garages will hire you."
Robert D replied: "It is better to do the tech school than do nothing. It is a start. This may open the door for you. Try to get as much experience on your own as you can. Working on your own vehicles, helping friends etc, the more hands on the better. A hiring owner or manager will be able to tell a lot about you just by talking to you. Having a tech certificate will give him some idea where you stand with regard to learning, it also shows that you had the initiative to go for some training."

schticklick replied: "i suggest using the reg ones and using shaving cream on the lenses. it works great on my bathroom mirror."
sensible_man replied: "Why not try home remedies for steam and fog on mirrors. Vinegar, used as a washing aid will prevent a lot of the fog. I used it on my motorcycle helmet lens and it worked. Lots of people use shaving cream wiped on bathroom mirrors to prevent steaming up."
Corky R replied: "A little hint divers use to keep the insides of their mask lenses from fogging over. Take a little of your own saliva and wipe it around on the inside of the lens area with your finger. This will help keep the fog from forming and let you see better."
happymeal replied: "Use car wax on them. Wipe the wax on then wipe it off when the wax dries. Also works wonders on mirrors, windows (keeps the dirt & water spots off), toilets, bathtubs, ect."
Dirk D asked: "I'm starting Junior College classes in August and I wonder if there's anything I should or could do in the next few months to prepare? Books, websites, activities?"

watty_ofthe_wattykins replied: "I wished I would have asked myself this question.I am currently in a junior college class for small engines and motorcycle maintenance and I think the best thing you can do to prepare yourself is check out and read up on how an engine works and then go down the list of components. This site will help you get a good grip on the objective of the components of the engine. Then once you're in school you can go into the subject a bit deeper. You could also get a job in a small engines shop. There's plenty of shops that will hire you with no experience because the field is that in demand. So you'll get hands on training and experience and get paid for it. Just remember to go back to school because that's where you learn the little details that might take you 20 or so years to accumulate on your own."
tristram_zzz replied: "I never took the class, but you should look up info on the net, pertaining to books. And for hands on, i would go to a mechanic and see if they will let you watch and learn."
Dirk D asked: "I'm going to take classes at the junior college. Is it taken seriously or is it a joke? Is it competative or cooperative? Is it a group effort with lots of team work or each person does their own thing and works at their own pace? I assume there aren't a lot of speeches and presentations required?"
Question posted courtesy of:
Kyle H replied: "Each school will be different. Take it seriously, but not too seriously. Most schools use a teamwork approach at first, then when you get some experience, they will have you work individually."
fcgreatness1989 asked: "I have been able to to draw since i was 5 years old, but i really into automobiles now .Thats the only career that i see myself making money. How can i combine the two careers?"
Question posted courtesy of:
oldcorps1947 replied: "A certified auto mechanic gets paid by the flag hour. A industry standard auto repair books list each auto repair and the time that they said it will take to do the job-->flag hour.If the job calls for the job to be completed in 3 hours, you are paid for 3 hours, if you can do the job in 1 you still are paid for 3 hours, if it takes you more than 3 hours, you are still paid for 3 hours. An experienced certified auto mechanic can easily make a six figure annual income working for a major dealership. Work is steady and relatively easy to find. The demand for certified auto mechanics is very high and will be over the next 20-30 years. I don't know how much of a demand there is for custom paint jobs, but I would think major trucking firms that advertise beer and etc. on the trucks would provide you will a chance to display you art skills. Communication arts positions are difficult to find and the length of job is usually until the project is completed, then you are off to find another position."

Back in the October 1955 edition of Mechanix Illustrated, readers got a glimpse of their automotive future that never was. The Argentine Aerocar eschewed the normal automotive design for GIANT PROPELLER BLADE technology.

Okay, so it may not be “Back to the Future,” exactly, but it’s not far off from the Will Smith’s sweet Audi in “iRobot.” AirShip Technologies has officially announced its trackball-based DeLorean as an entry for the Automotive X-Prize, or, the road to 100 miles per gallon.
