job search

Job hunting or job seeking is the act of looking for employment, due to unemployment or discontent with a current position. The immediate goal of job seeking is usually to obtain a job interview with an employer which may lead to getting hired. The job hunter or seeker typically first looks for job vacancies or employment opportunities. Common methods of job hunting are:

  • using a job search engine
  • looking through the classifieds in newspapers
  • using a private or public employment agency or recruiter
  • finding a job through a friend or an extended business network or personal network

laraiyne replied: "Definitely. Try losing your home and your kids on top of it. All because the job market sucks!Hang in there."
KeraniBai replied: "My dear, this is what you must do.Go and get a job in a place that suits you. Which it sounds like a movie theatre or nursing home would be ideal...I mean because both these positions are ideal for quite people such as yourself who are indeed great people. Many nursing homes are in need of "activity people" to help with arts and craft time for the residents. Then working in the kitchen as a Dietary Aide is good. Also working at the movies, is nice..selling tickets (behind a booth) or talking up tickets OR working at the food counter will help you in speaking and greeting other people.Self-esteem can only be raised when you move through your fears and face life head on.. Bookstores like Barnes and Noble are always in need of great people like you..Since you want to work..or need to work.. Get out there and face these people.. Smile and ask for what you want. Go for it! You can do it..but you have got to try..starting tomorrow. You can make it! Redo your resume with only the last 3 jobs.. You can make it!!!! Yes, you can!"
Me replied: "Don't worry about it, it will all get better, just tough it out oh well tah keep your chin up as Robin Hood would say"
FLOYD R replied: "Many of us are. Don't give up. Sooner or later it will come, and when the first offer comes, 2 or 3 more will come along. It never fails. You have to call them. What's the worst they'll do! Direct your call to an answering machine that says "Thank you for calling, good bye!"I went thru a stage-- a co I worked for 14 years went under, got another job, lost it after 6 weeks and thought I'd never have a decent job again.A few weeks later, I got the best job I had in my life.D O*********** N O T ****** GIVE UP!!!!I've heard it said, your career isn't a career unless you get fired or work for a co that went bankrupt."
Caretaker replied: "You have lots of company. There are many older people retrenched in the last down turn that are still trying to cope. Be thankful you have your youth and time ahead of you.If you have lots of jobs in you c.v. I would guess you are taking what's offered and not what interests you. Perhaps you need to take a break. My suggestion would be do volunteer work for a while. That would give you a chance to focus and perform without pressure. You might develop an idea of what your real desires are and when you finish you have a good entry on your c.v."
poptart replied: "well I am going through the same thing, but not to the same extent as you. (just a student looking for a part time job) It sounds like you need to fix up your resume and work on your job interviewing skills. Your job network person is right...a resume with too many items on it is overwhelming. It should be short and simple, while at the same time highlighting your best skills and qualities. If they want to know your full job history, you can include that with your application. As for the interviewing part goes...practice makes perfect. There are some pretty standard questions that come with job interviews. Prepare your answers ahead of time so you know what you're going to say, and can say it with confidence. Practice with a friend if you need to. It also might help to narrow your job search. Exactly what position are you looking for, in what field? If you know exactly what you're looking for, its easier to find more places to apply. Well, good luck. Don't give up yet!"
Are you talking to me?!?!? replied: "You have to really put the vibe out.Sign up with another couple of employment agencies. Send resumes, phone to check they received them, then phone again. Just do it! Bribe yourself with a reward once you've done it. Yes you may encounter rude receptionists but it is more likely that someone will notice how keen you are about the job. It's hard to get over phone nerves but it really is easier than you think. If you have a nice friend get them to call and pretend they are you if you're really struggling. Put the word out amongst your friends and family that you are looking for work and to let you know if they hear about any positions. Often it's not what you know but who you know and if you come recommended it will be easier to get an interview. Truncate your resume - extend one or two jobs and delete some of the minor ones - if it gets you a job you're capable of who cares!Enlist a couple of great people to be references. When you go to an interview RESEARCH the company background, go with questions prepared and think of two or three reasons why you'd be good for the job, that way you won't be nervous."
thehotmom replied: "Millions of people go through this, and it's sad. It's really hard sometimes due to the economy or what your area is going through. I really want to recommend a few ideas..One thing, go to your local employment office and try to seek assistance finding a job. Log onto monster.com if you have not yet and post your resume' and also look for employers in your area hiring. Also check out craigslist.org sometimes people looking for employees post there as well, doesn't hurt to check. Next thing you can do is go to a college in your area and see about taking a course toward a career that you can do that has a lot of jobs. Nurses, EMT's, etc and you can become an LVN within 2 years, also an EMT within a year or two, there are quite a few other jobs.. You can also get assistance at some colleges to pay for your education and even get enough money to cover some of your home expenses. Also, for a job while you are searching there are a couple of online jobs you can most likely get and they hire a lot for people to work at home and you can pretty much get a job easy at either one of them as long as you have a pleasing voice and a computer with internet access.Good luck!"
bkishorevarma asked: "How does some sites list the jobs offered by various job search engines. How do they collect data? For example, rediff job search allows the user to search for jobs across a number of job search engines / job portals. How does rediff collect the data? Are there any established job advertising distributors in India?"

I haven't been in the job market for several years, and I know there are a ton of new job search websites out there since then. Used to be that Monster was pretty much it! I have a bachelor's and about 20 years experience in the marketing/advertising field. I would appreciate recommendations for professional sites that offer more than just a bunch of entry-level stuff and bogus sales jobs."

Question posted courtesy of:
fred replied: "it just depends on the career you are looking into and if the new employer is really serious about hiring you but they should understand that you are a teacher"
DrIG replied: "It is a bit too early/ I would suggest that you prepare for the job search now but not really do anything until March. Employers will respect your desire to fulfill your obligations."
kit asked: "I know that job hunting is considered to be time consuming but what I meant by my initial question was what can I do to improve my job hunting so I can get the maximum results for the time alloted to me? I've already tried the usual search engines such as Yahoo Hot Jobs, Monster, The Daily News, etc. I've even asked my friends for recommendations but so far I haven't gotten any results. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!"

swatthefly replied: "the job search is notoriously long and tedious. there's not much that you can do beyond what you've already done.one thing that i would do if i was in your shoes: follow up with the places you've submitted your resume to. call or email them. this does two things: first, it shows you are interested in the job. second, it puts your resume back on top of their list. it may not be much, but sometimes its enough to get you that precious interview.good luck!"
Francesca Thomas replied: "Check out craigslist jobs for your area or state. You might find something there."

I’ve heard that nobody agrees to informational interviews anymore because they know that people are just fishing for jobs. Should I spend my job search time on getting some or is the info interview passé? An informational interview is a meeting to get information about a specific career, job, or industry. For example, an aspiring....
