boat insurance

Vehicle insurance (also known as auto insurance , car insurance , or motor insurance ) is insurance purchased for cars, trucks, and other vehicles. Its primary use is to provide protection against losses incurred as a result of traffic accidents and against liability that could be incurred in an accident.

Nat's Mom asked: "My husband and I are getting ready to purchase a used boat. It is a 1997 and we will be getting a loan through the bank for like $10,000. Will we have to carry boat insurance? We will only be using the boat on the river and maybe a few large lakes."

familyof404 replied: "yes. because it is financed just like a car. you will want insurance. remember insurance= in case sh!# happens."
justanotherengine replied: "Of course you need insurance, how else would the bank collect on the note if the boat was destroyed by fire, or stolen ? If it's a personal loan, you're on your own."
shy gal replied: "i think its best if you carry boat insurance with you.better be safe than sorry."
bill d replied: "boatus.com has the best boat insurance you can get on line quote"
paultech6 replied: "Think about a boat mishap you have caused. It is wise to carry insurance. If you hit someone or have collision your gonna need insurance.Dont let anybody tell you otherwise. I have seen people get sued for everything they own because they didnt have insurance."
tom replied: "The bank will require "hull and machinery" insurance for the value of the loan. Liability is up to you. The premium will be based on the amount of usage, waters you intend to sail on, and your experience level. The policy may even restrict which bodies of water you may sail on. Read it carefully."
rph490 asked: "I was thinking of purchasing a 17 to 24 foot in length crownline boat with a V-8 engine (not sure how big of V-8) and trailer. I have no idea what insurance will run and thought I would ask. Thanks in advance for your answers."

Boatin' in VA! replied: "There are so many variables to consider that providing an answer is not easy. Things like your experience, location, where you're going to be boating, age of the boat/trailer, etc. A 17, 18, 19 footer with a V-8 may/may not be insurable and considered over powered by some insurance agencies. Guesstimate? Our 33' cruiser w/ twin V-8's runs us a little more than $1,000 per year. You might figure on maybe $500 - 700 per annum. The easiest way to find out is to let your fingers do the walking by either calling or emailing carriers. BoatUS, National Marine Underwriters are two good ones specializing in marine insurance and don't forget to check with your auto insurer."
Moto250cc asked: "I'm pretty certain you dont HAVE to get boat insurance like you do auto insurance, but if anyone knows otherwise, I'd like to know. I live in maryland, but I'm sure in most states u dont have to get insurance for your boat."
Question posted courtesy of:
badbill1941 replied: "I would just buy insurance, unless you want to open the door to a liability lawsuit in the event of an accident."
Dave M replied: "Nope...doesn't affect the operation of the boat does it? Now, your marina might require it...mine does. I just say "yeah, I have it"...I don't and they never check. Some states might require it so ...for example...someone can pay for you spilling fuel..., etc."
WHO replied: "No. It is not a legal requirement for boat owners, but the marinas have the right to turn you away if you dont have one. There are some boats that cant be insured. For example canoes and kayaks, single handed boats, ferro cement boats, etc. Because the insurance companies wont take it and nobody can make them."
shrimpon replied: "Generally it is not required by law to have insurance on a boat. A lender will require it if you have a loan to purchase one. Verify with your insurance company, but when a boat is being trailered the auto insurance normally covers it. However as compared to other items being insured boat insurance is not very much, and if you have several policies (home and auto or multiple autos) with the same company often can be added to current policies for very little. Considering all that could go wrong on the water is not a bad idea to have."
Neal replied: "IN MARYLAND you do not need boat insurance, but you do have to have a boat operators license if you was born after July 1, 1972. Maryland also charges a boat tax, even on non residents if the boat is there more than 60 daysIts best to check with your state you live in, for some states like ARKANSAS requires liability insurance if the boat motor is larger than 50 hp."
Lisa R asked: "I heard that after a boat (ski boat) is 20 yrs old, you can no longer get insurance for that boat? Maybe this is a California thing? Maybe not?"
Question posted courtesy of:
Joel T replied: "I would assume you could insure it considering its worth is next to nothing so why not collect your money to insure something so old. they make a profit and even if there is an accident they are not gonna have to pay much for it's value."
Frank K replied: "you can insure any boat.Try all the companies, though"
sandrarosette replied: "we have a ski boat from the early 70's and we still have to insure it. The insurance isn't so much for you, it is if you hit someone else. The insurance will pay for the other boat's damage. Depending on what type of insurance you have. Most insurances go by the hspr of the motor, and the type of boat.Keep it insured."
LAURA J replied: "Do not take it for granted, use your own head to make the judgement. Here is a good resource I have tried."
dbharrold asked: "I am going to liveaboard a 29ft sailing boat worth about £35000 purely based in a local marina. I need £2M worth of public liability insurance, any idea on the cost of an annual policy? Thanks in advance."
Question posted courtesy of:
Professor replied: "I have a thirty two foot sailing boat with the same sort of value and I pay a touch over £400 a year, which I think is very reasonable. You can get cheaper but I haven't bothered to shop around. I use a broker called Stephen Whiteman at Lymington near Southampton"
MR. D replied: "sounds about right"
