legal nurse consultant
A
legal nurse consultant
(
LNC
) is a registered nurse who uses expertise as a health care provider and specialized training to consult on medical-related legal cases. LNCs assist attorneys in reading medical records and understanding medical terminology and healthcare issues to achieve the best results for their clients.
A legal nurse consultant bridges gaps in the attorney's knowledge. While the attorney is the expert on legal issues, the LNC is the expert on nursing and the health care system. LNCs screen cases for merit, assist with discovery; conduct the existing literature and medical research; review medical records; identify standards of care; prepare reports and summaries on the extent of injury or illness; create demonstrative evidence;

"I know of a person who is a great nurse, but who is burned out by the increasing workload that is impacting the quality of care that patients need in a hospital.Is being a legal nurse consultant a good alternative? Is the pay good? Is there a lot of hassle in terms of getting referrals from attorneys? Are there a lot of classes to take to get certified? How does one find out about reputable training programs? Thanks."

"I am an RN, and have been interested in the idea of Legal Nurse Consulting. Is there really much of this work available out there, or are these schools and programs just trying to sell me a certification?"

"Absolutely. Medical malpractice attorneys hire RNs as expert witnesses, etc. Experience is important.Also, workers' compensation insurers hire RNs all the time as medical case managers.Obstetric and surgical nurses will get more expert witness work. You can sign on with agencies that provide expert witnesses or you can go it alone and advertise in legal periodicals.I would contact some agencies and ask what they have a need most often for and go from there."
