asked:
"I am very interested in medicinal plants & herbs and their potential to cure cancer, AIDS, and other diseases. Can someone please give me insight into how valuable they are now to science and medicine and their future (value in the medicine business and science research) as well as with the FDA? Are they considered weak now and what about in the future? How can genetics and molecular biology be involved in research with these plants? What education do I need to be involved in the medicinal plant industry and in pfizer or other drug company giants?"
Question posted courtesy of:
oikos replied:
"They sure are. Most of our pharmaceuticals were originally derived from plants before they were manufactured artificially. It is not so much a matter of being "weak" as it is a matter of being standardized in strength. If you are interested, attend a good school of pharmacy and take all the pharmacology courses you can. You might want to do graduate work in pharmacology as well."

"I have slight high blood pressure and was prescribed to take Pfizer Norvasc 5mg per day. I found myself loosing weight recently after almost 9 months taking the medication. Does the medication cause the weight loosing? If yes, how to treat it?"

anniewilkes64 replied:
"One of the less common side effects of Norvasc is weight loss, but it usually happens after 2 weeks of treatment. Any sudden, unexpected weight loss should be paid attention to, as it could be a sign of a serious underlying disease. Go to your doctor."
Adam S. replied:
"Both weight gain and weight loss are listed as side effects of Norvasc, but with a very low incidence rate.Whatever is behind your weight loss, it seems pretty unlikely that it's Norvasc"
Forgotten Ones replied:
"Weight loss isn't a normally a side effect of Norvasc. I work in a pharmacy and it isn't a complaint I have ever heard nor have I heard the pharmacist tell a patient this a side effect. Listed below are the side effects :Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:More common * Swelling of ankles or feetLess common * Dizziness * Pounding heartbeatRare * Chest pain * Dark yellow urine * Dizziness or lightheadedness when getting up from a lying or sitting position * Slow heartbeat * Yellow eyes or skinSome side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects. Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:More common * Abdominal pain * Flushing * Headache * Sleepiness or unusual drowsinessLess common * Nausea * Unusual tiredness or weaknessOther side effects not listed may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your healthcare professional."

asked:
"How can I land a job to start my career at Pfizer or Merck or any other global and major company, if I am an undergrad in college? What do I have to do or courses I should take if I want to be a scientist but also one who dreams of establishing a worldwide company like Pfizer?"
Question posted courtesy of:
kt_b_blue replied:
"If you want to actually _establish_ a company (not just work for one), then you'd better either find a way to come up with a cool hundred million, or become great friends with people who have them. Part of the reason those companies are considered giants is because of the giant resources it took to make them and maintain their standing today. The "research and development" that they do is NOT cheap. As for getting a job, most of them LOVE a masters student, and pay them very well to get a PhD as well. If you want a decent position within one, especially as a scientist, an undergraduate degree will not cut it."

"I am new to investing and Pfizer is offering to buy my shares of Encysive. What happens if I dont sell them will I lose the stock or will it continue on or will it become shares of Pfizer?"
Question posted courtesy of:
solidgoldlandspeeder replied:
"sell the stock - I won't take the time to explain it to you because it is waaaaaayyyyy to complicated for someone like you, - sell it to Pfizer before they retract their offer."
NetAdvisor replied:
"Generally the pros will sell the stock in the open market the day when the deal is announced. It could go higher and you could get a little more, but it could have a snag and it could go lower, or the deal could fall apart, then the stock will tank at or just below the price before the deal announcement. Recent example: SLMA. Deal withdrawn, stock plunged. On deal announcements:Sell first, ask questions later."

"i.e How would an entrepreneur begin a Pharmaceutical company producing certain prescription drug pills."
Question posted courtesy of:
SG Elite replied:
"You need to buy the rights to that production. The rights is lightly to cause you millions. Next is a licence from FDA to manufacturer these pills."
SOUTH LAKE replied:
"It takes millions of dollars to get some of the drugs formulated and FDA approved . I would start by purchasing a pharmacy and work from there ."
