prescription drug
is a licensed medicine that is regulated by legislation to require a prescription before it can be obtained. The term is used to distinguish it from over-the-counter drugs which can be obtained without a prescription. Different jurisdictions have different definitions of what constitutes a prescription drug.
Dispensation of prescription drugs often includes a package insert (in Europe, a Patient Information Leaflet or PIL) that gives detailed information about the drug.

"As a whole, medications regulated by the FDA and sold inside the United States are safer than those sold in other countries. The FDA tends to be more strict than their counterparts. This is especially true in third world countries. They simply don't have the resources to effectively find companies that are intentionally or indirectly harming/misleading consumers."

Even if you do have a medical condition for which one is prescribed, they can still cause much harm with side effects, but the remedy most of the time is better than the alternative of not taking the drug. Some Rx drugs are deadly poisons used in lower doses to cure a disease and are restricted for that reason. Others are highly addictive and are restricted because they could make someone an addict if they abused them. I've tried to get this person help but the person says the he/she is in so much pain she/he has to have them but goes from doctor to doctor to get the meds. I know it's going to catch him soon.
