last minute travel

The White House travel office controversy , often referred to as Travelgate , was the first major scandal of the Clinton administration. It began in May 1993, when seven longtime employees of the White House Travel Office were fired, after a brief investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The White House said the action was due to financial improprieties in the office operation. Critics said the actions were done to allow friends of the Clintons to take over the travel business and that the involvement of the FBI was unwarranted. Heavy media attention forced the White House to reinstate most of the employees in other jobs and remove the Clinton associates from the travel role.

Investigations by the FBI and the Justice Department, the White House itself, the General Accounting Office, the House Government Reform and Oversight Committee, and the Whitewater Independent Counsel all took place over the subsequent years. Travel Office Director Billy Dale was charged with embezzlement but found not guilty at trial in 1995. First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton gradually came under scrutiny for allegedly having played a central role in the firings and making false statements about her role in it.

In 1998 Independent Counsel Kenneth Starr exonerated President Bill Clinton of any involvement in the matter. In 2000 Independent Counsel Robert Ray issued his final report on Travelgate, stating that Hillary Clinton had made factually false statements but saying there was insufficient evidence to prosecute her.

hibby76 asked: "I LOVE to grab my backpack and travel! I have some discretionary income and lots of free time and flexibility in my schedule. Where are the best places to search if you want to go somewhere soon for a great price? It seems like most "last minute deals" aren't much of a deal, and that others are simply advertising scams. Thanks!"

southrntrnzplnt replied: "Last minute deals are scams for the most part, it draws you in thinking you are getting a good deal, when really you are not. The further out you book the more chances of getting a cheaper fare are. In the airline industry the discount fares sell first. The closer to departure, the more expensive it gets. Cruises Ive seen with good last minute deals just to fill up the cabins and some hotels, but for the most part its just the opposite. The only way it works to just pack and go is really to work in the industry. The airline I worked for allowed their employee's to fly for free, plus we got the deals on cruises, all inclusive resorts etc at last minute prices just to fill up space. Its the last minute people that make the money for the industry. Not planning ahead gives the companies a heads up because most times its an urgent matter and the person is willing to almost pay whatever it takes to get to where they need to be. If your schedule is flexible, then try to plan ahead. Being spontaneous in the travel industry and wanting it cheap dont mix. Now that airlines no longer offer stand-by travel its hard to just grab and go unless you just jump in your car and hit the road. Try traveling mid-week. Weekends are only cheaper for car rentals. Summer is cheaper than fall of course, but just shop around. Sign up for Travel Zoo. They send a weekly e-mailer about what deals are out there. Try to fly out of a hub like Atlanta, Philedelphia, Chicago, DFW...etc. Those are the airports that will have the biggest discounts. Little feeder's like Buffalo, Augusta, Gainesville etc will not have the specials you are looking for. Be careful booking on travel websites. They charge excessive fee's and do not offer the best routes or connection times. Make sure you READ THE FARE RULES because they will lock you into the trip and you can not for any reason change your itinerary. If you are someone who uses a credit card for business or pleasure, try to get a rewards program card and be loyal to a hotel chain or airline. You can redeem points earned for nearly free travel and get bonuses when you sign up. To redeem points you do again have to be flexible and book in advanced in most situations depending on the destination. If its a highly traveled route, book well in advance."

Jeo K replied: "Last minute deals are available with many online booking sites. You can try:1.2.3.and other sites. These days everyone is offeringlast minute deals. Check them out and you will surely get the best deals."
KM_Fubar replied: "one link one deal...."
Dangermanmi6 replied: "try the link below its the one I use to Cuba and I've had some good deals from them. They are an Ontario based travel agency so they have to follow the TICO rules. Be warned though Cuban customs is very intimidating for the first timer also hang on to your bags and don't let someone help you to the bus to your resort they will want a tip usually about one dollar US they don't want loonies. Also you will need the departure fee last time is was $25 US per person. We enjoy going to Cuba its a nice country to visit and it is a reasonably safe place to visit."

John L replied: "Bring condoms! Australians love Americans."
K Bear replied: "This is a good site - be a Smart Traveller"
tentofield replied: "It depends where in Australia you are going. If your three day trek is in the NSW or Victorian mountains, you will need cold weather gear and be prepared for snow. If it is in the tropics, you will need a good hat and sunblock. Australia is a big place, bigger than the USA (without Alaska), and has a large range of climates."
iansand9876 replied: "My mother once gave me some very sensible advice when I was going through this exercise of last minute worrying - "It's a civilised place. If you forgot it you can buy it."It makes travelling a little less worrying if you remember that."
Tim N replied: "Many visitors from the US and Europe arrive in June/July and are surprised to discover that it is both cold and wet here in the southern half of Australia at that time of year. Make sure you have some warm clothing, and something waterproof for your trekking, and she'll be apples. We do have stores here, so you will be able to buy anything that you forget. Don't stress too much about what you pack, and enjoy your visit."
aprendiz2 replied: "It is very important to check customs regulation in Australia. They are quite strict! You can find the complete list here...."

John M asked: "What is the best website for last-minute travel Specials for Hotels and/or Rental Cars only? (I am not looking for package deals!)Or as an alternative, What is the best membership card program- ie- AAA, etc that offer good discounts at hotels?"
Question posted courtesy of:
Adam replied: "AAA is the best membership card program out there. For last minute deals, or for any deals, I always go with travel agents. They always have found cheaper deals than online websites."
jgmcs replied: "google it"
snap_ruawake replied: "I found the best deals on hotels.com"
Laika replied: "For last minute hotel deals, I always rely on . It's the sister website of (for non-last minute bookings). They have an optional membership that if you opt to join, would give you discounts and perks everytime you use the site. Then again, I guess it also depends on where you are going to. There are some places that are not really available for booking online so a traditional travel agent might be able to help you.As for Rental Cars, sorry don't have any recommendations, but I think Ratestogo and HotelClub has some partners on their sites as well. I just haven't tried those."

A passenger whose father had an ultimately fatal fall canceled her flight. The airline was unwilling to modify its draconian last-minute cancellation policies -- even in the face of tragedy. The story is a good argument for travel insurance, but it's too late for this passenger.
